Description
Two young women emerge from a near-black ground, both dressed in black, so that only faces, hands and hair carry any light. The figure in front tips her head up and slightly away, lips parted. Over her shoulder the second looks straight out of the canvas and raises one finger to her mouth.
The gesture travels past the first figure entirely and lands on whoever is looking. This is the only painting in the group in which someone meets the viewer’s eye, and what she does with the contact is ask for quiet.
The darkness does the work the blank grounds do elsewhere in Fetahu’s painting. There is no room, no floor and no context: two people and an instruction.
