The only landscape canvas in the group. Two women stand apart against a deep teal-green ground, wearing the same red slip dress, both with their arms folded tightly across their chests. The figure on the left holds a threadbare orange teddy bear against her body. The figure on the right holds nothing. Both faces dissolve at the hairline.
The Latin title and the doubled figure set up the painting’s question: whether these are two people, or one person standing at two distances from her own childhood. The bear is the only object in the series that belongs unambiguously to the past.
