Description
The largest canvas in the catalogue and the only horizontal one besides Unus-One. A woman lies full length on a daybed striped in pale teal, pink and coral, her eyes closed, a white frill at her collar and running beneath her. Her dress is black and a single olive stroke travels the length of her body. The wall behind is bare.
A thin black ladder is painted down the right-hand side, crossing the bed and continuing past the bottom edge. It is drawn flat, with no shadow and nothing to lean against, so it belongs to the surface of the picture rather than to its room.
Whether the figure is resting or laid out is left open, and the ladder keeps the question alive: a way up, or a way out, set just past her feet.
